Sky Sports sources understand that Tottenham Hotspur are closing in on the signing of Real Madrid’s Lassana Diarra.
Skysports.com revealed earlier this month that Spurs had made a move for Diarra – who wants to seal a switch back to England.
The French international has already played for Arsenal, Chelsea and Portsmouth in the Premier League and now he looks set to join his fourth club.
Redknapp signed Diarra during his time at Portsmouth, and has already confirmed his hope of completing his signing.
The fee for the move is said to be an initial payment of £6m which could rise to £10 and anyway you look at it, that’s a bargain. Harry Redknapp’s positive relationship with Jose Mourinho may once again be in play as Tottenham did of course capture Rafael Van der Vaart for a ludicrously small fee as well.
Thus far the summer has been a rather subdued one for the North London club and has involved in the main both Redknapp and chairman Daniel Levy fielding questions about the future of Croat Luka Modric. Only one significant signing has been made that would affect the club’s first team, Brad Friedel from Aston Villa, and youngsters Souleymane Coulibaly and Cristian Ceballos from Siena and Barcelona respectively.
Redknapp has had his hands tied to some extent with Levy stating that the manager must sell before he can buy and it appears that the sales of Jamie O’Hara and Robbie Keane to Wolves and LA Galaxy has hel
ped garner funds to cover the cost of Lassana Diarra.
The Tottenham boss has been looking to add more steel to the centre of his midfield and a move to bring in the experienced French international seems a far more intelligent one than paying over the odds for Scott Parker. This potential addition may well spell the end of Wilson Palacios’s Spurs career and there is said to be interest in the Honduras international from Stoke City, who apparently also want Peter Crouch.
