Arsenal midfielder Theo Walcott has called for manager Arsene Wenger to invest in more experienced players before the transfer window shuts at the end of the month.
The 22-year-old scored the only goal of the game in the Champions League qualifier first-leg at Udinese but thinks the squad needs more wiser heads if the team is to compete.
The Gunners have lost captain Cesc Fabregas, Gael Clichy, Denilson and Emmanuel Eboue, while Samir Nasri and Nicklas Bendtner are on the verge of leaving the Emirates.
Wenger has only signed one established player, Gervinho, and focused on recruiting promising teenagers Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Carl Jenkinson and Ryo Miyachi.
Wenger has been frustrated at a lack of value in the market. Bids for Phil Jagielka, Gary Cahill, Jadson and Juan Mata have all fallen short of their club’s valuation.
The squad looks even thinner with Alex Song and Gervinho suspended for the next three games, while Jack Wilshere, Johan Djourou and Kieran Gibbs are all injured.
This has left Walcott as one of the senior figures of the side, and was amused that he was the oldest player on his table at Arsenal’s pre-match dinner for the game against Newcastle United last week.
Walcott admits some players have privately questioned the direction the club are heading during an unsettling summer.
The England winger is confident that Arsenal will bring in reinforcements before the transfer window closes at the end of the month
“I was the oldest on my table at Newcastle at dinner,” he said. “I was 22 and I was the oldest.
“It was quite funny, but it is important to have a mixture of experienced and young players.
“The boss knows what he is doing. He has picked out great players, we didn’t know where they came from, before, so only time will tell what he is going to do.
“We have a fairly big squad, but we don’t want the squad to get lower and lower.”
