Rafael Van der Vaart: Spurs don’t need Luka Modric to make top 4

RAFAEL VAN DER VAART fears Luka Modric will quit Tottenham - but insists Spurs can challenge for the top four without him.

With Chelsea preparing an improved £30million bid for the unsettled Modric, Monday's trip to Old Trafford could be the Croatian midfielder's last game in a Spurs shirt.

Van der Vaart said: "There is a lot of speculation about Luka and we don't know when he is going to leave.

"I hope he will stay, but we still have plenty of other fantastic players and a team good enough to finish in the top four.

"Manchester City have spent a lot of money this summer, and so have Manchester United. But we are different at Tottenham, and it's not a problem for me."

Dutch international Van der Vaart arrived at White Hart Lane in an £8million move from Real Madrid on the final day of last summer's transfer window.

Now Van der Vaart, who scored Spurs' opener in the 5-0 Europa League win at Hearts on Thursday, is hoping that manager Harry Redknapp can pull off a similar last-ditch deal for Manchester City striker Emmanuel Adebayor.

Rafa said: "He's a big player with a lot of experience."
