Toe injury prompts American to withdraw from Cincinnati tournament
Serena Williams has pulled out of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati ahead of her second-round match after aggravating a toe injury.
Williams, who was bidding for a third straight title after wins in Stanford and Toronto to start her hardcourt season, admitted to feeling some discomfort in the big toe on her right foot during her opening victory over Lucie Hradecka on Tuesday.
The American returned to action in June after 11 months out with a foot injury and health problems but said the latest setback is related to a prior toe issue and is not serious.
"It is not nearly as extreme. It's just a bit of an aggravation because I think I've been pounding it a lot and playing a lot," said Williams, who was due to meet Samantha Stosur in the second round.
"But I don't think this is a good time for me to take a big chance. I just don't think that would be smart."
Williams will now rest ahead of the US Open, which starts in New York on August 29.
"I'm definitely disappointed, but at the same time, I have a lot to look forward to," she added.
"If anything, this might be a blessing in disguise. I might get some more rest and prepare for the rest of the year."
