Werder Bremen defender Per Mertesacker has alerted Arsenal by declaring his excitement at the possibility of playing in the Premier League.
The 26-year-old has been on the Gunners radar for some time but the Bundesliga club have now revealed they will listen to offers for the star.
The German international now looks set to make a move to the Emirates, with manager Arsene Wenger being left frustrated in his search for an imposing centre-back.
Two bids for Everton’s Phil Jagielka have failed and moves for Gary Cahill and Christopher Samba have not materialised because of their high valuations.
Mertesacker, who has one-year left on his current deal, could be available for around £10million.
“For a national player it is a good thing to get experience of playing abroad,” Metesacker told Bild. “I have said that England excites me.”
At the weekend, Werder general manager Klaus Allofs said in the People: “We are willing to discuss a transfer for Per. We have promised him we will listen to serious offers.”
