Barcelona are approaching D-Day in this summer’s pursuit of Cesc Fabregas, with Arsenal adamant that the situation must be resolved within a timescale that would allow them to replace their captain.
Arsène Wenger would like the saga settled before Arsenal host the Emirates Cup this weekend and officials from the European champions are expected to remain in London over the coming days.
Although Barcelona have been relentless in their public pursuit of Fabregas, the only actual offer this summer of £27 million fell well short of Arsenal’s valuation of around £40 million.
Since then, there has been contact about different ways of structuring a deal, including a failed attempt to factor in enhanced compensation for two of Barcelona’s former academy players who have now joined Arsenal.
Thiago, a Spain Under-21 international midfielder, is the latest player to have been mentioned as a potential makeweight. Arsenal, though, would prefer a straight cash deal that would provide Wenger with funds in other areas.
He still wants to add another defender and is considering a new bid for Phil Jagielka, the Everton and England centre-back. Chris Samba and Gary Cahill are other options.
